I recently got a newsletter from living crafts magazine and as I followed the thread I came to this wonderful arts and craft website.D blumchen and company
The czech egg shaped beads, the crepe paper, the doilies, etc. are all so creatively inspiring. The glass beads would be a beautiful embellishment to a knit or crochet piece.

This has been a fun weekend. I went down to the Joseph Saxton Gallery Sat night. They were showing avant garde films of the 20s and 30s with live band accompaniment. I am going to have to look up the films so I can understand what I saw more but it was certainly a visual feast. Besides, the gallery has wonderful photographs. I often find that things that are not exactly about the art and craft you do, can inspire you to do more with your passion. I got to talk to one of the bands' members and I am always struck by how the positive creative energy from one thing can flow to another. I am definitely feeling inspired today!

I also went to Art is Alive on Fri night. Canton was a hot town this weekend!!

International care symbols

This little write up from Iowa state extension office may give you a good idea of what the symbols on your yarn package mean. International care symbols
One thing to note is that while a yarn may be considered machine washable (acrylic, or washable wool for example), they will still benefit from being gently washed or put into a lingerie bag and then dryed over the shower rod. A hand knit item will look nicer for a longer time if treated well. Of course if you give the gift to someone (say a new mother), it is better they wash it however they want and at least use it.

latest interweave magazine corrections

I got an email recently given a specific correction to a pattern in Pieceworks and I will put it below. Designers and editors try their best but there is always something that is missed. Considering the level of detail involved in pattern writing, I am surprised more errors don't have to be published. Anyway, if you are about to do a pattern from Interweave you may want to check the Interweave corrections website.
They do put corrections or clarifications on their website and it is always good to check before you start.

Weather is crazy outside so I am in and looking at online knitting magazines in between organizing.
I'm going to list some below, but you may also find the yarniashop links page on my website useful.
If you knit for kids Petite Purls will spark your creativity. Their patterns are free.
Twist Collective has lovely patterns and articles. You pay for the patterns but they are not expensive and you are supporting designers who will keep giving inspiration.
The latest Knitscene winter 2010/spring2011 came out recently. It is an easy one to miss because Interweave has always considered it a special issue not a subscription issue so make sure you check it out.
Of course if you have a logon for Ravelry (and it is easy to get one. You just go on and ask for one), you can view all sorts of patterns. Find out where to get them and they are yours.
The new readers, apps for iphone, or droids can help you to carry that pdf you bought around with your easily. If you are getting into online patterns, make sure you backup your hard drive (you can also store patterns purchased on ravelry on their site). I like to store my patterns on ravelry and download them to my computer. Your purchased patterns are an asset that you will want to protect. You can also print them out and keep them in a notebook in case you have a computer failure.

Folding a fitted sheet perfectly

I know why would I care how to fold a sheet efficiently..... Because it makes more room in the closet so you can store more yarn behind the sheets. Check out this wonderfully simple explanation on you tube for How to fit your fitted sheets.
While on youtube, check out the yarniashop videos. I will be adding more. I'm going to ask the knitting group for suggestions if anyone can get there in spite of the snow we are having. If you like a particular person's videos you can subscribe to them. There is suppose to be a nice handy button to add to your personal website but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. You can choose to get emails when new videos are added or you can just go to youtube and look.

It has been a while since I mentioned Stephanie Pearl McPhee's blog. The yarn harlot's site is a fun read and so are her books. She recently posted a pattern called encompass. Look for the Dec 13 entry or if you have a ravelry account you can link to the pattern easily there.
If you are a relatively new knitter, the beauty of the pattern is that you can explore various textures and get a nice scarf out of it. If you are not a new knitter, the changes in the pattern will keep you from getting bored.

Idea for the Holidays

Not about knitting or yarn, but a wonderful idea all the same. Recently, 2 different women told me how several women in their family got together to make nut rolls. I mean this is a production where 20-25 rolls are done in a day. Both were from an eastern European background, but it got me to thinking. There is still lots of time between now and the end of the year or maybe you plan for a day in the new year, but wouldn't it be a fun way to get together. Find some dish that is a hit in the family and meet at one person's house. The younger women could learn the dish and everyone gets to spend time together. Each of you takes one or more home and you each take different friends or relatives to deliver food to.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and have a chance to reconnect with family and friends.

scarf with knitted ribbon style yarn

KFI distributes several yarns that are actually a knitted ribbon. One is called Flounce and the other is from online and it is called Solo. When knitted up you get a sort of boa type scarf. There is a video here that shows you how to do it.
There have been rumors that Flounce is discontinued but according to a letter I recently go KFI is just waiting on shipment. Until KFI gets it, then they cannot ship it to stores. I have none left but I do have some of the online solo in the store shop.

super stretchy bind off for toe up socks

Cat Bordhi has several books out. Her toe up sock descriptions are quite clever. One of the tricky things about a toe up sock is getting the cuff bound off at the ankle in a way that makes it very stretchy and comfortable for the eventual wearer. Check out this youtube video of the super stretch bind off. This is the perfect bind off for a stretchy rib.

I wonder if you would be interested in helping me spread the word about an amazing group

of knitting kids in New York who need your support - not money, just votes and publicity!

My name is Betsy Rodman, and I run a knitting/book club called "KnitLit" at

Haverstraw Middle School, in Haverstraw, NY (Rockland County).  Kids knit blankets for

charity and we read and discuss a book together. This is an impoverished community

(more than 50% of our students have free or reduced lunch), where knitting has caught on.

KnitLit is extremely popular, and I even had to turn students away last year due to budget

constraints. Sadly, the club is facing elimination this year due to a dire budget situation.

How you can help: we have been nominated for a "Power a Bright Future" award from the Clorox

company.  Winners are determined by vote (people can vote once a day through Nov. 1),

and amazingly, after 5 days of voting we are in the TOP 5% NATIONWIDE among all of the nominees!

BUT we have a long way to go to get to the top, with some serious competition from lots of sports

activities and marching bands.  Wouldn't it be wonderful for handcrafts and the knitting world to

see a group of young knitters win this award? Is there any way that you could help us spread the

word to a larger audience?  Perhaps a blurb to your e-mail list? We need to move quickly, as

voting ends Nov. 1st.

Finally getting caught up

It has been a hectic few weeks. Closed the store, started several classes and helped a family member move. Roxanne (the crochet teacher) has beginner crochet and tunisian classes going. I have 2 sets of beginner classes. One is an adult class and the other is 4/5th graders. All that with a 5 day trip out of state to help a family member move from one assisted living location to another.

Anyway, on to the knitting news. Skacel has not sent out the addi lace interchangeable needles yet. They are still fine tuning to make them perfect BUT they have the natura interchangeable needle sets on their way to stores. I do love this needle whether it is a regular circular or the interchangeable set. The needles are great but the cord is so perfect.

The new Deep Fall knitty issue has some great patterns in it.

I got some new books recently....the knitters year by Debbie Bliss, the new commemorative Knitters almanac by Elizabeth Zimmerman, Modern top Down and the new aran knitting by Alice Starmore. The aran knitting is not just a reprint of the old book, it has been updated. I have enjoyed reading through all of them.

Yankee Peddler, Algonguin Mill Festival, Spinner and weavers guilds

It is Sept so the Yankee Peddler Festival is coming. If you plan it right, you can hit the festival and come to Yarnia for the big sale. Last day of sale if Sept 17.

While I'm at it, the Algonguin Mill Festival is in Oct. The lady (Holly) who makes the homespun consignment yarn that I carry in the shop usually goes to this festival. They do have a spinners and weavers guild that meets there monthly. If you are close to the area, you may want to check it out while you are at the festival.

BTW Canton also has a spinners and weavers guild. You can join by contacting Kathy at the Canton Art Museum.

Aultman Hospital Wellness on Wheels (WOW)

Pepsi is doing an online voting for groups to get a $250,000 donation. Aultman Hosptial is in the running for their Wellness on Wheels (WOW) program that takes health care to people. You can read about it on the Pepsi website or the Canton Repository has run articles.

While to really learn it takes work and discipline, this magazine gives you some great ideas for fun things to do together. Besides, there are a lot of problem solving skills that can be developed from doing crafts. I don't know if I have the joints/eyes to make the items on this site but they sure are adorable.

I love classic elite yarns. You always get a beautiful fabric with them. I had a customer come in with a sweater she is doing in summer set in the picket white color. It was so classy looking but the best part is that it is the perfect sweater to keep in your car for all the cold restaurants and movie theaters.

New Chic Knits patterns

2 new patterns from chic knits arrived yesterday. Cerisara is a 20st cardigan with a lovely lace detail.
Super cupcake is a hat/scarf set that is easy to do and very fashionable looking. These are new patterns so they are not part of the storewide sale but the other chic knit patterns are. Bonnie Marie Burns writes a great pattern and her patterns are printed on high quality paper.

I just got my copy of Strikketoj a new book by Helga Isager. It's secondary title is Knitting Designs Inspired by the Pop Culture of the 20th Century and it is a fascinating set of patterns. I mean she even made an 80's sweater with the sleeves of that era look good. I still have the Isager yarn in stock.

It came along with Knitting 24/7 by Veronik Avery. I have her Nordique yarn and that yarn is part of the sale.

Classic Elite fall 2010 books

I recently looked at the new classic elite pattern books. There are a number of great projects and there is something for everyone.

There are 5 books in the curvy knit series (chest size starts at 36 or 38 and continues up to 59")
Last year, each book carried patterns that used different yarns in the classic elite line. I still have a number of these books in stock. The new series for the fall 2010 (they are available in shops now) concentrates on one yarn per book. For example the Sanctuary book that I have in stock here at yarnia contains patterns that uses wool bam boo. Wool Bam boo has this gorgeous rich sheen. Of course, I have never met a classic elite yarn that I didn't like, but the organization of the books means that you have in one spot several patterns to choose from if you are using yarn in your stash. All you need to do is figure out which classic elite yarn the yarn from your stash is like and then find that book.

Hall of Fame week

Yarnia will be open usual hours Hall of Fame week plus an extra day Sunday Aug 8 12-3.
The Canton Repository will have a special addition that comes out Thur July 29 that will tell about all the fun things that are going onThere is a highlight list on the HOF website.
It is obvious that the Hall of Fame provides some great things for football fans, but there are plenty of activities for all interests. The last weekend in July has the hot air balloon illumination followed by a balloon launch the next morning. The first weekend in Aug is the grand parade, with floats, bands, famous football people and celebrities and the enshrinement of the new Hall of Famers.
(The following is a list of fun things to check out or you can check out the Canton Visitors Bureau to get more ideas. Of course, please plan on bringing your out of town knitting/crochet visitors to visit Yarnia. The stores and places below are unique to Canton.)

Well the big family wedding was this weekend. The first cousin of my children to get married. My niece is a beautiful bride. I knit her a garter of louet laceweight linen . In order to help it stay up I put elastic inside the silk ribbon before threading through the piece. She has the same skin a her mother so the fabric of the garter had to feel good in spite of the heat. The linen washed up beautifully before I put the elastic in.

Because of the big sale going on in the store (30-50% off), I just found the following blog post that I never posted. So here it is.....
The big TNNA (needle arts association) convention was the first weekend in June in Columbus OH. I saw many beautiful pieces of knit and crochet and many different sorts of yarns. Seeing all this creativity is very inspiring. You can see the fashion show on the yarn groups website.
There was a wide variety of patterns and yarns that I saw made up. I think there will a resurgence of the entrelac technique used in patterns.

I took a class in which Debbie Bliss talked about her design process and the creation of her brand. She calls herself one lucky designer because she gets to control the whole process from picking the yarns to the designs. She does not have to do the distribution, warehouse, selling part. Hearing her talk definitely explains why her line stays true to a vision because she has always been the provider of that vision. She is also involved in the photo shoots of the books. I can't wait to go through my old books and look at them with more informed eyes.
Her new books design it, knit it (there is a child and an adult version) should inspire you to make your knitting your own.

There is a new web letter pattern for a moss stitch scarf on the classic elite website that uses Véronik Avery's Nordique.
Every part of this yarn is American made.
Not too soft to withstand everyday wear.
Not too coarse to be worn against the skin.
The way it is milled (a "worsted" mill) reduces pilling.
Nordique is everything Véronik hoped for:

My sister (a librarian) sent me an article today about Susan Garten a graduate of Towsen State Teacher College in 1951. I guess I connected with the story because I have 2 daughters who graduate this year. Sarah got her Masters of Fine Arts from NYU:TISCH in Dramatic Writing and Rebecca will graduate from Glen Oak High School. I don't want to imagine how upset I would be for them (and me) if they were denied the opportunity to have everyone acknowledge their accomplishments.
So if you and your love ones are in the midst of graduation prepping chores, remember to take moments to just enjoy and celebrate the fact that you have this wonderful life cycle event.

Dachshund Sweater, Ravelry

There is now a group on Ravelry for Yarnia. (You are welcome to join our group if you have a logon to ravelry.) Someone posted a link there for a sweater meant for the the long (should be lean, but my Louis is not lean), big chested dachshund. dachshund Sweater

The sweater designer is raising money for a good cause.

I have 2 dachshunds now. Louie is my big boy who should have been a miniature. Rosie is a 6 pound dapple.
We lost our 5 pound Heidi of the Jungle last year to heart failure. It will be interesting to see if the pattern can handle the wide length/size differentiation of my dogs.

If you haven't gotten around to signing up for Ravelry, you should check it out. It really is a very useful site.

Helga Isager's Olive

Olive has been a very popular pattern from Helga Isager Aminono 08 book. The book is hard to find because it is out of print. I sold my last copy a few weeks ago. Actually, there are several great patterns in the book so if you can find the book in some local LYS, you should buy it. If all you want is the Olive sweater you can get it from the Isager website here for the next week at least. I do have the Isager yarn here in the shop if you get the pattern and want to do in that yarn. Marianne Isager's yarn line is gorgeous and made with very high standards. I also have the Clara Dress and the Cherry scarf patterns available with the purchase of Isager yarn.

St Denis Magazine #2

The new St Denis book 2 has come in and out of stock twice already this week. Veronik Avery has created a lovely sequel to her premier issue book 1. This one has patterns by Avery, Pam Allen, Jared Flood, etc.
Please call if you want your name put on a book in the next shipment.
I have the Nordique yarn in stock. The new one that is used in book 2 was not available for shipment yet when I called this last week, but if you need it, give me a call and I can make sure your color is there for you.

I also had a recent run on Aminono by Helga Isager. The book is out of stock but I do have the Isager yarn. Some of the Isager patterns are becoming available in PDF or kit.

There has been much discussion recently on whether yarn companies will have books or go to PDF or what.
I personally like having the book. The ink does not fade and I find it easier to locate my pattern. While they last I have Dale of Norway books, The first Marianne Isager etc in book format. With the above sale, it is a good time to pick up some books while the world is still providing hard copies.

Laurel Hill needles, Polo, carnival party, new cast on

Laurel hill sock needles came in. I also got some of their square wood needles and triangular wood needles.

The carnival party pattern book with adorable little girl dresses came in with the Polo yarn.

The latest issue of Cast on Arrived (May/July). There are a lot of patterns, but the biggest categories are knitted smocking and raglan sleeves. The website for the knitting guild still has the most recent issue online so if you want to see the latest issue, you will have to come in to the store. The Cast on magazine is only available in yarn shops. You will not find it at big box or craft stores.

The buy more save more sale is still going on.

Stitch and Pitch Cleveland May 24, 2010

Monday evening, May 24, will be the 5th Annual Stitch N' Pitch Game at Progressive Field with the Cleveland Indians playing the Chicago White Sox. Stitch N' Pitch brings together two wonderful traditions--- Baseball and the NeedleArts. Come to a game and knit, crochet, embroider, cross-stitch and needlepoint. Sit among friends, family and colleagues and cheer on your favorite Baseball Team. Beginners, intermediate and experts are all welcome.

This year’s SNP Package is $15. The package includes your game ticket,a commemorative Tote bag and a portion of the price will be donated to a local charity. If you want to purchase a picnic, there is an
additional optional charge. See the SNP Flyer here for details.
I will turn in a joint order for Yarnia for any orders I have by Wed April 28.
I will do a second order collection and turn it in by May 5.
There is no guarantee that the two groups will sit next to each other,but I was afraid if I waited the people who are timely might miss out on the special limited gift.

Cleveland SNP will be making a cash donation to a local institution, the Domestic Violence Center of Cleveland. Participants are asked to bring in knit or crocheted squares of a washable yarn 10 inch x 10 inch in size. These will be stitched together to make afghans which will be donated to the Domestic Violence Center.

There is a new kids pattern booklet called Carnival Party is on its way to Yarnia along with the Polo yarn from Skacel that is used in them. The patterns are from Diana Harker. IF you are a member of ravelry, you can see the patterns here.

Speaking of Ravelry.
There is a new group on Ravelry for Yarnia Shop. You must be a member of ravelry to join the group but otherwise joining is easy. If you request a log on, it comes pretty quickly. If you don't get a response, your computer may have stopped the email. Also many workplaces block this sort of thing so you may need to do request from a home computer. Ravelry is a fun place to see patterns, yarns and most importantly see yarns made up from the patterns. People take pictures of their projects and post them.
I thought this group might give you a place to give hints or ask for help for projects that you have started from patterns or yarn purchased at Yarnia.
You could also start your own KAL (Knit along ) or CAL (crochet a long) where you help each other out.

Camp Friends

The Camp friends committee is doing a auction/dinner fundraiser April 24, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to raise funds to support outdoor education for girls. A good cause, good food, and there are some great items available in the auction. Ticket order form.

Camp friends was established to support the financial and programming needs of the only Girl Scout camp in our area, Great Trail Camp. Camp Friends recognizes the need to provide financial support to enhance the likelihood that Great Trail Camp will remain open for future generations of local Girl Scouts.
Funds raised may also be used to provide scholarships to women in the area of outdoor education. To qualify for an education scholarship, the girl would have had to have been a Girl Scout from the South region who earned her Gold Award.

Zauberball is back in stock, Popular Jil Eaton Patterns in stock

Zauberball sock and Zauberball Starke are latest arrivals in superwash wool. There are some new colors from what I got in previously. Starke is the 6ply or DK weight big brother to the sock weight. Both yarn lines are from the Schoppel wolle company. The color changes are very different from other sock yarn lines. By the way, this is one of the few yarns that you do not pull from the center. You should "unroll" the yarn from the outside of the ball. I will be taking a lot of my sock yarns to knitter's fantasy so if you live locally, you may want to get yours before I go.

Unisono from Zitron and zoe from Shalimar are another recent sock yarn arrivals.

Now in stock, from Jil Eaton the pinafore dress and the Brittany jumper. I also have the cotton tail yarn that she uses in the pattern.

The palace and celebrate the 19th amendment

If you have never been to the Palace theater in downtown Canton, you are missing out. It is a beautiful, it still has a working cloud machine (make sure you look up) and it has the only Kilgen pipe organ in the country that is still in its original home. The Palace is have a membership drive right now. I love the little card you get with a membership because I am always running late and it means I can go right in. I can skip the box office because they just punch my card. Running late is a good thing because then I don't have time to get the chocolate covered pecans I love at Heggy's. (they stay open late by the way). Heggy's chocolate is good, but its the fresh roasted nuts that I love.
You can buy a CD of the pipe organ music right now to help support the maintenance of the organ.

On Thur April 15 to celebrate the 19th amendment they are showing the iron jawed angels at 7:30.

Just to throw in a store note. My daughter made a felted rabbit from Lorna's Wool during the Wed night knit group time in less than an hour. These would make a great Easter basket addition. Our kits are on special right now. These are very ample kits and include the felting needle.

Repairng knits .....and some Cool internet sites

Beth Brown-Reinsel is a great knitting teacher. You will enjoy her 3/31/10 blog entry about repairing knits.   It has some great information all in one handy space. Spring is here and it is time to clean and repair your knits so they are ready for next year. You must clean your knits before storing them. Make sure they are good and dry and you really want to repair at least some of them. You know you will be glad you did the repairs when it suddenly gets cold next fall. You want to have a least of few sweaters totally ready until you can get the others repaired.
I carry Eucalan, Soak and the unicorn fibrewash products. These are all wonderful products to treat your knit/crochet items nicely.   What does your hair look like if you do not use a good shampoo product for it?

Check out this cool You tube site that is an ad for making natural gas. Knitters will see why it is so cool if you watch awhile. I think it took over 4 months to prepare for this little video. Think of the square footage of knitting you are seeing.

Remember the movie Coraline? The woman who knit the teeny tiny sweater for that movie, Althea Crome, has some more miniature knits to show off on her website.   So if you have been afraid to try sock needles, look how tiny you can go and enjoy it.

This event is not just for Timkin High school. It is a stark county event that just happens to be at the High school....and it is free. A couple of years ago, I sponsored the making of a community rug out of wool at the event. Everyone who came had a chance to stomp on and felt the rug. Somewhere around here, I have pictures of people making the rug. IF you have an outdoor event this summer and want to try this on your own check out this website on how to get a group to make a rug.

This book The Fine Line by Grace Anna Farrow just came in and I LOVE IT!. I actually saw Ms Farrow doing one of these pieces in an Isager workshop last June and I loved everything about it. The colors she used, the way it flowed and draped, the fact that I could wear it anywhere with many, many things..... It was on my to do list to contact the gentleman who provides me with the Isager yarn I sell here at Yarnia to find out if she ever got the pattern written up. On a totally different note. Remember that March is Colorectal Cancer awareness month . I know the idea of a colonoscopy is no fun, but early detection can make such a difference. Recent yarn arrivals:
Kisses from Sirdar. This non wool yarn has a very subtle variegation of color. The new pattern book uses this effect beautifully. The pictures online do not show off how beautiful the yarn is. If you knit for kids, you will want to see it in person.
Debbie Bliss baby eco. This is one of the yarns used in the new Debbie Bliss magazine for summer. There are a lot more colors available than are shown online so far. Another one that is better in person.
New colors of snuggly baby bamboo. The new colors are a much more vibrant palette than the ones I had in stock.

St Baldrick's Cancer research fundraiser

The 8th annual St. Baldricks event is coming soon (March 14) in Canton. This group funds more cancer research for Children than any other. You can donate online or by mailing in this form. You can choose a participant of your own to sponsor, give a general donation or my favorite participant is kristin W on page 4 of the participant list. I say support a young women willing to shave her head to raise money for cancer research. Her head will be shaved at a school assembly.

I was out last week and now I am trying to catch up. Roxanne the crochet teacher here at Yarnia is an art teacher in her regular life and she worked for hours on Wed to do a "feng shui" affect on Yarnia. She is really good at making things look arranged so hopefully she can do that for the store. That is not my forte. I fight my basic pack rat nature all the time. I am working on the class list. There are still some upcoming classes listed but I need to get the new ones added to the website.
I know all of you have been home knitting.crocheting because of the olympics and all the snow so to help you restock, come check out the weekly specials in March (I might even have one for the end of Feb if we can travel. Supposedly we are getting another storm warning)

Southwest Trading company just sent me a note about this neat pattern using Karaoke (which I have in multiple colors) called not entirely entrelac. I thought you might like it.

I have a bohus sweater sitting in my queue. It is sitting there because when I do fair isle I like to use both hands and a bohus pattern requires me to purl with the working yarn in my left hand. My natural style of knitting is english "throw" style. So purling with my left hand is a bit weird for me. I looked on the internet last night to watch various peoples' knitting style and found the Norwegian Purl
I like it. It really works and I am getting tension that looks good with what I do with my right hand.
So what is the point of all this? The point is you never stop learning or adapting. I admit, I am old enough now that I don't change as much as a use to, but change is good for you once in awhile.
Speaking of knitting styles.
Beginners classes at yarnia are taught in the western style of knitting. Students can choose whether to be an English thrower (working yarn is in right hand) or continental (working yarn is in left hand) knitter. You don't choose your style on whether you are left or right handed. You choose the style that fits your hands. Once you practice, whichever way you knit will become faster and smoother. I teach western style because the stitches are mounted the same way all the time and because most patterns in the US assume your are knitting this way.
For students in classes above beginner level, I work with you if your style is different so that you can get the results from a pattern that you want.

So what is the difference between western, eastern or combination knitters? Basically, they differ in how they wrap the yarn when making a stitch. The result is that the stitch is can be mounted on the needle differently for these knitters. Different isn't wrong. It is just different. I teach western style of knitting because the stitches are mounted the same way all the time and because most patterns in the US assume you are knitting this way. For example, most patterns will ask for a K2tog and assume that by doing this, you will do a right slanting decrease. If a knitter has a different style, he/she must know how to get a right slant decrease for their style. I am going to list a couple of sites below that you might find interesting to explore this. For those of you out there who are frustrated because it seems like your knitting results are always different than others or if every time you ask for help it actually messes up more of you knitting than it helps, you might find the exploration very illuminating.

Latest issue of knit scene (springwinter 2010) arrived along with the latest Cast on Magazine.
The latest pattern books from Classic Elite Gallery and Farmers Market are in and we have summer set, allegoro, sprout, classic silk, solstice, silky alpaca lace and premiere yarns to do the projects in.

Just in today are these cute hat shaped needle gauges from clover. Ever wonder why it is hard to figure out what is the right needle for the job when you are deciding between a 10 and an 11. Take a look at a needle gauge. A 10.5 is one millmeter size up from a 10 but an 11 is several sizes up.

New yarns are coming from Shalimar (Zoe sock, honey worsted, miss chunky). The dyer is in the process of getting a new website up so there are many, many more choices of colors than the site shows you. There are several designers doing patterns in this yarn (and when my shipment comes, it will have a new color card).
Monitors often lie. Green and gray are often confused on computer monitors from the color in real life. Purple and brown are also misrepresented. That is why it is so nice to see a yarn in a shop.

Miep Gies died this past Monday. She was 100 years old. She is one of the non jews who helped Anne Frank's family to hide in Amsterdam during WWII. She is the person who saved Anne's papers and gave them to his father after the war. People often wanted to portray her as a hero and the following quote shows that while she may not have considered herself to be a hero, I feel she is definitely someone to hold up as a role model. The world is certainly a better place when ordinary people do their human duty.

I picked up a book I hadn't read in awhile and I highly recommend it. Gift from the sea by Anne Lindbergh.
She definitely gets you thinking about how to center you life and how to keep things/people/events from pulling you like a centrifuge away from yourself. Everyone has ways, but I think knitting and crochet are one way that people find to feel creative and have "alone" time.

Don;t forget the "I don't want to count it" sale. It goes on through January. If I have a good email for you, you got an email and if I have an address you got a snail mail post card.
If you got neither, then either you did not give me the information or I typed it wrong. So, come in enjoy the sale and you can give me good info if you want to keep updated.
Yarn, books, needles are all on sale.
By the way, when you look at a bin in a yarn shop, you often are looking at the color choices (unless we sold all of a color out of a bin and haven't restocked it yet). Here at Yarnia, I find it easier to keep the extras in the back in a bag instead of taking the bin apart to look for them. If the one or two balls you see are not enough for your project, please ask. We have a lot of back stock (hence the sale). I could have 30 of that yarn that you think I only have 2 skeins of. It is also worth asking if I have the color you want, in case it is not stocked on the shelf at the moment, especially during a sale.

I went looking for a good pic of how to do a nice seam on the baby surprise sweater shoulders tonight for a student. The garter stitch edge of each side runs in two different directions. This is tricky because it is one of the more unusual seams to have to do. I found a good close picture of the seam in progess on Stephanie Pearl -McPhee's (The yarn Harlot) website.
If you haven't heard of her, do yourself a favor and check out her blog and her books. They are very entertaining and actually have a lot of insight into human nature. Besides, I have found many a good knitting tip on this site. (like how to fix a miss crossed cable when the sweater is finished, seamed and done done done) Of course there is always the one about the fiber stealing squirrel
or the project that didn't want to start. On this last on, I am not enjoying her pain. I just find it comforting that even a very good knitter can have one of those moments when the path from the directions to the hands is not smooth.

A couple of other Notes on the baby surprise seam:
It pays to
1. Check to see if you have folded the sweater right side out. The miter is differerent looking but very subtle. 2. Take time to pin the shoulders together at various points so you will not be trying to fudge in a big bunch of fabric at the end. The two edges stretch out differently.

I had a customer ask a question Sat that caused me to pull out a trusty book. It is called the book of patterns by Ann Budd. I love this book. Basically, it allows you to figure out a pattern for whatever gauge yarn you have.
For example, Hats. It gives you 5 or 6 different gauge yarns
and then it uses them in size premie to adult male. This formula style allows you to make a basic hat with any yarn. The book has this same information for other knitted pieces as well.

Now in stock the Latavian mitten from Lizbeth Upitis and the green sweater by Sunday Holm (based on an actual Elizabeth Zimmerman sweater). Both join other patterns from Schoolhouse Press that we have in stock.

The multidirectional scarf pattern from Ann Norling is back in stock. Basically, it a garter stitch scarf, but the little clever technique makes it more entertaining to do and it looks complicated.
New solid colors of opal fingering weight yarn arrived. These are great to use alone or to add bands of color to your variegated sock yarn. They also come in handy to help you use your leftovers. I have many different ones in stock.

The very popular mini mochi (fingering weight) yarn now comes also as mochi plus (worsted weight). It changes color in a subtle pretty way and is very soft. Either of these can be used in the above mulitdirectional scarf for great effect. (Noro or Tapestry from Rowan or vero from fiber trends etc also make a great MulitDirectional scarf).

I don't know why but I find living craft and wild fibers magazine a very relaxing read. I just realized that the living craft magazine website has free patterns in their craft room. If you go to the living craft site you can see what is in the issue and if you look on the top and click on "craft room", you can check out the pattern.

I have been working on a alp oriental wrap from Feza yarn. It is a super easy and really beautiful piece that knits up fast. Come in and take a look. I have small samples of all the various colorways for you to look at.
The following picture does not do the yarn justice. It has a lot more sparkly and texture than shows in the picture. This is a fast knit on a size 15 or 17 needle.

Tip to make your computer help you: The search button (it probably has the yahoo or google symbol) at the top of your browser is very handy. Old patterns will call for 4 oz of wool. Most yarns are now put up in 3.5 oz (100 gram ) skeins. You can put 16oz to grams in the google search button and it will give you exactly how many grams that is (453 grams). Now you know that you need 5 skeins. You can also use this space to convert centimeters to inches. If you enter 92 centimeters to inches, it will tell you that 92 Cm is 36 inches.

google translate or Bablefish are great websites to translate that german pattern on the back of your yarn to English. (it will translate other languages as well)

Knitting Tip: Ladders: Knitting stitches do not stand alone. They are part of the community of stitches they are next to. If you are too loose or too tight with a stitch in the same spot ( like between 2 double point needles), you will get a "ladder". If you are getting ladders, pay attention to how your are pulling at the needles, pulling off the stitch, or the tension of the working yarn. If you are doing something different than you typically do, adjust. Too loose and you will have a bigger bar than usual between 2 stitches. Too tight and you usually make the bar of the next stitch over too tight.
Speaking of knitting tips.... the new issue of Cast ON is on its way. This a a great teaching magazine that is only available in yarn shops. The articles often have many technique tips. I highly recommend this magazine. Beginners will learn useful things and intermediate/expert knitters can improve technique and learn what to emphasize to their students.

I found an interesting basic crochet snowboarder hat. pattern in a blog. The Dark Horse Fantasy yarn would do it nicely if you want acrylic and the Dale of Norway Falk or Cascade would do a nice job in wool.

Oct is breast cancer awareness month. Basically it is time to double check and make sure that you have had your mammogram. It is really easy to let more time lapse than you should between them. If you can't remember, call your doctor and find out when it was and get in on the calendar.

Needles came in today from bryflex, skacel (addi's), and Brittany.

Janet Szabo has a pattern company called blue sky knitting that are distributed by Fiber Trends.
She is know for her cable patterns so if you do too, you should check out the recent patterns that came in. There is everything from an afghan to a Christening gown.
I have gotten her twists and turns newsletter for years. There is an article in the most recent one about how to alter your cables for sweater shaping that is quite interesting.

Also back in stock from Fiber Trends is the snowboarder hat and the bathing beauties.
